Colin Powell was a professional soldier for 35 years, prior to becoming unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the 65th Secretary of State. During his service he held command and staff positions and rose to the rank of 4-star General and was Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the Defence Department. Following his retirement from the Army Colin Powell wrote his best-selling autobiography, My American Journey, which was published in 1995. Born in New York to Jamaican Immigrant parents he was educated in New York City public schools gaining a bachelors degree in geology from the City College of New York. His further academic achievements include a Master of Business Administration degree from George Washington University. An experienced public speaker, Colin Powell offers unique insights into the White House and military affairs.
